Lower Dover Field Station is located between San Ignacio and Belmopan in the Cayo District of Belize. Our jungle hotel is only a 1/2 mile walk from the Western Highway so feel free to travel by bus if coming from Cancun, Caye Caulker, San Pedro, Placencia, or Tikal. No other jungle lodge in Belize is this accessible and we have real jungle!!! Better yet, we are very close to ATM cave, making Lower Dover the perfect stop in Western Belize for budget adventure travel.
Our 100 acre property is covered with 90 acres of jungle animal habitat. This means 100’s of bird sightings are possible (we even have a nesting toucan pair during May!) Every evening birdwatchers will enjoy flocks of parakeets and groups of parrots coming home to our jungle habitat to sleep. When the birds are not sleeping, they work hard to eat fruit from the many native fruit trees before our guests can. No worries! It just makes for great, up-close, wildlife photography!
Even more exciting, in 2010 a significant Maya city center was identified on our property now named “Lower Dover”. This “new” find is big news for local archaeology, and for those familiar with the excavations done by Harvard archaeologist Gordon Willey at Barton Ramie for the Peabody Museum. Barton Ramie is seen below as the corn field at Spanish Lookout. Lower Dover is right across the Belize River where Barton Creek enters. It is very likely that Lower Dover is the royal administrative center for both Maya sites Barton Ramie and nearby Floral Park, but it is still too early to tell. Surprisingly both of these Maya sites have been extensively studied, yet the jungle did an amazing job of protecting the Maya secrets hidden at Lower Dover today.
